The Lego Batman Movie

The first Lego Movie caught me by surprise. I have been a fan of Lego since I was a child, but upon hearing that a movie would be made about them I was skeptical. Growing up the way that I had used Legos was always to tell me own stories and create worlds within the worlds that I had seen in movies and on television cartoons. I was entirely surprised to see just how great the movie ended up being. When I learned that the Lego movie would be getting a sequel I was even less optimistic.

Once again I was positively wrong. The Lego Batman Movie is as good as the Lego Movie if not in some ways better.

Every movie targeted at children and adults walks a fine line between easy to understand jokes for kids and witty dialogue for the parents. Pixar has by far the best record in striking such a balance, but with the release of these two recent movies, Warner Brothers Animation is showing that they too may have some magic in them. What makes the Lego movies great is similar to what makes Disneyland so great. WB Animation connects the properties under their ownership in unexpected ways making it impossible not to grin.

The Lego Batman Movie places Batman on a journey to learn how to forge relationships even in the face of possible loss. Much like a Mel Brooks movie, The Lego Batman Movie throws one joke after another at the audience and a great many of them stick. After the failure that was Batman vs Superman it is refreshing to have a well written Batman story that follows even a degree of logic.

The movie is upbeat and fun. It feels more like a setup for a Justice League movie than the other two DC movies released in 2016. Both parents and children will be able to find something to enjoy in this movie.

8.5/10
