When Harry Met Sally...

I have never attempted to write about a romantic comedy before so this is a small challenge for me. While with dramas and action movies there are normally stand out points or themes that when connected bring about a moving revelation, this movie does not offer such findings in the same way. The topics discussed at the beginning of the movie are no different than those discussed at the end. While the characters evolve throughout the time of the movie, what is more interesting is actually just how much they stay the same.

The question that drives the entire movie is if men and women can just be friends. The answer is, well, complicated.

We are raised saying, "I love you" to our family. When we get to school, we are made fun of for expressing love to anyone in our age range. As we reach adulthood it feels as though we can only pick one romantic partner that we must then spend the rest of our lives with. While we grow in age we subconsciously fall into love with many though.

Our first love holds that special memory of a special connection that we cannot understand. With our second we share the memory of a first physical encounter in which we became vulnerable in a way that we did not realize existed. And from there we forge bonds with many others.

This concept is what I believe what makes When Harry Met Sally... such a strangely moving film. When Harry meets Sally he is in a relationship. When the two characters meet again, they claim that they have met their true loves. Then somehow as they ache from the events that unfolded between meetings they fall for each other.

So can men and women just be friends? It doesn't matter. The question was just a topic used to distract us from a love story.
