Ant-Man

Marvel strikes gold yet again. Ant-Man is by far the Marvel movie I was looking forward to least. In comics I like the story of him creating Ultron, so with that story out of the way with Avengers 2 I had low expectations. At the end of them movie I was more than happy to have had my mind changed.
Much like with the first Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel took a hero you don’t care about, don’t know about, but have just enough curiosity for to watch the movie. They then give you a few witty one liners from the main character and after that you just can’t turn away. The best Marvel movies convince you it won’t be be villain that ends the hero, but possibly the hero’s own mixed past. Scott Lang, a burglar with a heart of gold. Will he really find the motivation to succeed is far more interesting of a question than what the villain will try to cook up.
This key feature is as always a great boost to Marvel movies and a downside. There is just nothing interesting about the villain. I care about the heroes, I want to see them struggle and succeed, and it is exciting to see it all unfold. At the same time I care so little about Yellow Jacket. Aside from the armor he just wants money and that’s it. While this holds the movie back it does not ruin it.
Ant-Man is another shinning story of why even though every complains about superhero movies they will be here for many years to come. Marvel heroes are people driven by altruism through an event outside their control and this makes for a good story. It’s fun, you laugh and care about the characters and when it comes down to it that is a fair expectation for a summer action blockbuster. The movie could use more dialogue and less swearing but in the end you will have fun.
