Saving Mr. Banks

Possibly the movie for which I was most excited this year (after Iron Man 3 and Rush of course). The story of how Walt Disney and Mrs. Travers agreed to bring Mary Poppins to film immediately caught my attention due to Tom Hanks playing Walt himself. I am a huge fan of the Work and legacy or Walt Disney and am normally impressed by Tom Hanks making this a must see movie for me.
Before watching the film I read an engaging and through article on BuzzFeed about the real life history of the event and the situation that lead to this movie being produced. Both cases have similarities that bring to mind the quote at the beginning and end of Saving Mr. Banks saying that this story has been heard before. This line, although simple and artistic, does lend to the real story of the production of this film.
Each character is remarkably believable. Both lines and mannerisms of each actor and actress truly bring their characters to life in a memorable way. It is easy to believe that each line uttered by each character actually took place and it is worth watching the credits role because the recordings of Mrs. Travers and the men who went over Mary Poppins with her are played.
It is tough to comment much on much else because the movie does feel like a retelling of events as opposed to a stand alone film. There is little character development outside of Mrs. Travers because all of the other characters are along for the ride waiting for her approval or it is expected you already know who they are. This is not necessarily bad because the assumption that people know who Walt Disney is, is safe.
I give Saving Mr. Banks an 8/10. Anyone who goes to this movie because they want to see a movie about Disney will be disappointed, but those who seek an authentic recreation of the creation of Mary Poppins will be thoroughly pleased.
8/10
